Team MBYC dominates JCR 2012!

On the weekend of November 3rd & 4th Mission Bay Yacht Club hosted this year’s Junior Commodore’s Regatta, with perfect wind and weather conditions providing for close and exciting racing. With a record setting attendance of 150 boats, Team MBYC took honors all over the board, most notably taking all 3 top positions in the Sabot “A” fleet! Great job to all of the sailors and a big thanks to all of the parents and volunteers for making the day possible.

The 41-boat Laser Radial fleet was met with good breeze and stiff chop on the Ocean course Sunday, which made for tight racing. With a strong 3rd place finish on the first day Steven Leuck sailed fast and paced 8th. Missing a few races to take the SATs on Saturday Ryan Hopps made an extremely impressive comeback and placed 18th. Jesse McKnight had very consistent finishes and placed 21st. Carter Lynn had good hiking form and placed 25th. Cole Baker was pulling good starts in the competitive fleet, placing 31st overall. James Phillips also had a strong performance on Saturday, placing 33rd.

Sailing in his own regatta, and throwing a Blazer right over his hiking pants to hand out awards afterwards was our very own Junior Commodore Jameson Perry, who sailed in the Laser Full rig class. Jameson had 2 impressive 4th place finishes and placed 7th overall.

Team MBYC absolutely destroyed the Sabot “A” fleet. Out of 8 races, all 8 bullets were earned by MBYC sailors, with all 3 top podium positions held as well. Top notch sailing! Ryan Ratliffe had consistent finishes and great boat speed, and with 17 points took the gold. Right on his heels with 19 points, Max Brill pocketed 3 bullets over the weekend and with “beastly” starts placed 2nd. In 3rd was Sam Merson with 25 points, who while dealing with gear problems also took 3 bullets over the course of the weekend. Also stealing a bullet was Ian Brill, banging corners and coming out ahead more often than not, and with 39 points placed 6th. Great pin starts were had by Abe Dearden, who had consistent finishes and placed 18th.

In the 20 boat Sabot “B” fleet Willem Perry had amazing starts, earning a bullet on Sunday, and placing 2nd by just 1 point! Cary Perket also had good upwind boat speed, tying for 2nd with Willem and placing 3rd. Max Karmel had good boats peed, continuously improving throughout the regatta, placing 11th.

Sabot “C1” fleet was represented by 3 sailors from Team MBYC. Jeremy McCulloch, in his first big C1 event, had good starts and placed 3rd overall with 26 points. Right on his heels was Ava Dorvillier, with a 2nd in the last race and using good upwind angles, placed 5th with 42 points. Nicholas Aline had consistent finishes that also improved throughout the regatta, placing 7th with 45 points.

Representing Team MBYC in the 23 boat Sabot “C2” fleet was Jake Karmel. With an astounding 2nd place finish on the start of Sunday Jake sailed fast and placed 17th overall.

In the Sabot “C3” fleet Diego Escobar had extremely consistent finishes, even earning a bullet in the last race, placing 2nd overall. Cameron Woodall had a nice pair of 2nd place finishes, doing well in the lighter breeze and placing 7th. Upcoming star Cole Tilson took to Chicken Cove to brave the “C3” fleet, finishing every race and placing 15th!
