Weekend Racing Recaps - Summer Gold Cup NHYC 2013

On the weekend of June 29th &30th Newport Harbor Yacht Club hosted this year’s annual Summer Gold Cup. With over a hundred Sabots spread out on 2 courses, great breeze all afternoon, racing was tight and competitive. Team MBYC was out in full force, after finishing up a great 2 week Gold Cup prep module in this year’s MBYC Summer Sailing Program. The hard work the sailors are putting in is paying off!

In the Sabot “B” fleet, Max Karmel pushed the starting line and had god upwind helm balance. With consistent finishes, Max tied for 10th with 56 points and placed 11th overall. Willem Perryalso started to produce consistent results, especially putting together his last beat strategies and finishing strong. Willem placed 19th with 91 points.

In the Sabot “C1” fleet Jeremy McCulloch showed good boatspeed and tactical decisions, placing 11th with 86 points. Jake Karmel had absolute killer boatspeed all weekend, placing 24th overall with 148 points.

Team MBYC absolutely dominated the Sabot “C2” fleet, taking 3 out of the top 5 positions! With great starts and good upwind tactics, Cameron Woodall placed 2nd overall with 27 points, just 6 points out of first. With a nice bullet in the final race, Ryan Austin placed just behind in 3rd, with 43 total points. James Ozaki made it into “medal territory” by placing 5th with 52 points, sailing consistently and progressively better throughout the regatta. Diego Escobar showed great strength through the shifty breezes, placing 19th with 84 points. Kate McGraw started to show some consistency as well, placing 28th with 113 points.

In the Sabot “C3” fleet, Nicholas Shand had absolutely dynamite starts, and combined with great upwind boatspeed, enabled him to finish 13th out of a 40 boat fleet with just 44 points. In her first regatta Lucille Proul braved the breezy conditions and had an absolute blast. Using good hiking technique and upwind boatspeed, Lucille won her tiebreaker for 26th place out of 40 boats with 72 points. Great effort by all of the sailors and a huge thank you to all of the parents!
