2017 Summer Gold Cup

On the weekend of July 8-9th Team MBYC attended this year’s NHYC Gold Cup regatta. MBYC sailors battled tough conditions while braving the minefield of moored boats and commercial ferries, many of whom were racing at this venue for the first time. In the Sabot C1 fleet, Shane Tillson found good upwind lanes, and with a pair of bullets and a 5 point lead over 2nd, placed 1st overall. He will now be joining his brother in the Sabot B fleet! Marleigh Henehan had great upwind speed and positioning, winning the final race on Saturday, placing 5th overall. In the Sabot C2 fleet, Ben Conroy used good downwind boatspeed to sail his way to a 6th place finish, with a bullet on Sunday. Also winning a race on Sunday, Kaden Miller sailed incredibly fast to a 13th place finish. Just 1 point behind, and winning a race on Saturday, Lina Carper had awesome upwind angles and placed 14th. Sailing in Newport for the first time, Owen Fretwell tailed Kaden for a 2nd place finish on Sunday, sailing fast and placing 24th overall. Rowan Henehan had good starting positioning and consistent finishes, placing 26th overall. More bullets went to MBYC sailors than any other club in the C2 fleet! Holding down the C3 fleet was Allie Shand, who placed 2nd in the first race, and finished 18th overall. Paige Tillson, also new to the Newport venue, had consistent finishes in the erratic winds and placed 31st.
