When traveling, I often find that mobile communications abroad can be quite costly. A regular call can be significantly more expensive than the same minute via VoIP. However, on the other hand, if the internet connection is weak, the conversation becomes intermittent. So I wonder: is it better to overpay for mobile stability or take a chance with VoIP?

I'm used to relying more on mobile communications because you can't always find stable internet when you're on the road. But when it comes to long conversations, for example with family, VoIP offers real savings. I've developed a habit: I make quick work calls using my SIM card, and save long evening conversations for Wi-Fi and VoIP apps. It's both cost-effective and convenient.
During a business trip to Mexico, VoIP calls really saved me. Before departure, I stumbled upon an article https://www.cheapestdestinationsblog.com/2025/09/04/skype-alternatives/ listing alternatives to Skype. I decided to try one of the apps from the list, and it turned out that calling via Wi-Fi at the hotel was almost free, and the quality was even better than with a local SIM card. Since then, I have always had a backup option if my mobile connection fails.
